A Thing of Beauty

Welcome!
This is Me!

In March 2008 I left the states and landed in Italy - "the boot."  I've started a new life with my two children "Peanut" and "Buddy" and my husband "E."  Italy is full of surprises! and we're trying to embrace them all. Ciao!

Embrace Life! Abbracci la vita!

I was stolen by the first page. Visions of ships, colonial India, poppy buds leaking sap, a young Indian mother. Locked in. Pages flying by...

Imperfect. For sure. A kind of sliding door of characters through a slice of time all connected by a newspaper based out of Rome. Kudos for "getting in character" with so many different personalities, but I have a feeling this author (and newsman himself) has been collecting quirky profiles of co-workers his entire career and weaved them together for the sake of a book. BUT, I did read it quite quickly. (And finished it - not always the case.)

Wonderful! Read it! Everything Brooks writes is good.  Here's the review:  One of the earliest Jewish religious volumes to be illuminated with images, the Sarajevo Haggadah survived centuries of purges and wars thanks to people of all faiths who risked their lives to safeguard it. Geraldine Brooks, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of March, has turned the intriguing but sparely detailed history of this precious volume into an emotionally rich, thrilling fictionalization that retraces its turbulent journey... A complex love story, thrilling mystery, vivid history lesson, and celebration of the enduring power of ideas, People of the Book will surely be hailed as one of the best of 2008. --Mari Malcolm

What I'm Drinking

Pimm's Cup. Love 'em. To me, it's a make-without-measuring drink. Maybe a quarter glass full of Pimm's, then a few ice cubes, plenty of fresh cut fruit (lemons, limes, strawberries, kiwi are my favorite), add some slices of cukes for classic form, or pass, but don't when it comes to crushed fresh mint. Final step - cold ginger ale.

Dreamy Italian Skies, Part II - Sorrento

Can you believe, after just writing below about the spectacular skies you can see here in Italy, we stumbled on a DOUBLE RAINBOW in Sorrento?

My husband had checked the weather religiously for the last four days. Forecast: Clear and sunny. Cold. No big deal, we can do cold.

So as we set-off yesterday after breakfast with Santa, caravanning down to the Amalfi Coast with a new family who has just arrived here in Naples following us, we were commenting, once again, how checking the local weather forecast is absolutely futile.

Slick roads, drizzle, and even some heavy raining graced our swervy roads down the coast. Lamenting that we only had 1 small umbrella, we were thrilled when the parking garage attendant in our favorite spot in Sorrento eagerly handed both families huge umbrellas. (Now that's the kind of Italy I love!)

Setting out in the rain with 4 adults, 6 children, we were a big worried about the day, and E and I apologized several times. BUT, after making our way to the cliff overlooking the water, a regular stopping point, we were greeted with the biggest surprise: One complete rainbow that literally ended before our very eyes in the water below us!

I have never seen the start and finish of a rainbow, nor had it end "at our feet" like it did. After many pictures and thanks for the sign of good fortune, we realized that a SECOND rainbow had appeared, faint and light, but still TWO complete rainbows. Now that's fortuitous, and quite a sight to see.

The pictures weren't able to pick-up the second one, but here are a few of the complete rainbow we were blessed to witness yesterday in Sorrento.

End of the rainbow, the water before our feet

Wow!! What amazing pictures! I hope you enjoyed your day in Sorrento despite the weather. I haven't seen the Christmas lights there yet, but I've heard they are beautiful this year. Thanks for sharing!
